Materials resilience

Managing environmental risk
Throughout the business our aim is to reduce the number and quantity of hazardous materials used in our products and processes.
We strive to comply with all relevant regulations relating to the use and management of materials. Regulations define how we operate as a business and how we design, build, maintain and support our products.
Our approach to ‘design for recycling and reuse’ is tailored to each product, as they are generally bespoke and often have very long lifespans. An important environmental management issue for us is the responsible use and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials, as regulated under the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) legislation and elsewhere. The environmental management systems we have in place across all our businesses help mitigate the associated legislative compliance and materials obsolescence risks.
For example, in the BAE Systems Land business we removed all hexavalent chromium compounds from the metal treatment process in advance of legislative restrictions prohibiting their use without authorisation due to their toxic and carcinogenic nature.
