Lily began her journey straight from school, building confidence and practical skills while contributing to the manufacture of aircraft through hands on experience.

I was first drawn to BAE Systems when I learned about the innovative projects and the range of opportunities within engineering. Taking part in work experience gave me a clearer understanding of what those roles involved and I realised how much I enjoyed the practical side of the work. I’ve always preferred hands on environments and fitting felt like a natural fit for me.

Since joining, I’ve felt supported to develop both my skills and my confidence. Working in the workshop has helped me grow technically, but it’s also helped me feel like a valued part of the team. Having the chance to work across different placements has allowed me to learn from a variety of people, each with their own approach, which has really helped me build my understanding.

On a personal level, the difference has been just as meaningful. Before joining, I was quite anxious and tended to stay quiet, but through new experiences like speaking to new starters and taking on different challenges I’ve grown in confidence. I now enjoy meeting new people and working in new environments, and that change has been noticeable both at work and in my life outside of it.

I’ve grown so much in confidence since joining, not just in my skills, but in myself and that’s what makes the experience so rewarding.

Manufacturing Apprentice, UK

Joining straight from school, I began my apprenticeship by building a strong foundation of skills before moving into placements across different areas. Each experience has helped me understand more about how aircraft are built and how each stage connects, which makes the work feel even more rewarding.

Working directly on the product is what I enjoy most. Seeing an aircraft progress through its build from individual components to a full structure brings a real sense of excitement. Knowing that I’ve contributed to that process and seeing the final result gives me a strong sense of pride.
Being part of a wider organisation has also helped me feel connected to something bigger. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people across different teams, learn from their experiences and build relationships that support my development. That sense of community makes it easier to keep learning, growing and feeling confident in where I’m heading.

Being supported, encouraged and trusted to develop has made a real difference to me. This is my BAE Systems story – find yours by joining us today.
