About R&D

Members of the electronics research and development team collaborating on a problem.
The research and advanced technology business within Electronic Systems (ES) provides agile, innovative solutions to challenges spanning mission needs from sensing, signal processing and exploitation, to mission understanding and knowledge.

More than half of Technology Solutions’ (TS) portfolio of 200 working science and technology research programs are funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), with the remainder of programs being funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), classified customers, and military service labs, including the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), and Army Research Laboratory. TS also works with industry and academic partners on various projects.

Areas of world-class domain expertise include RF microelectronics and antennas; adaptive signal and image processing; cognitive RF processing, lasers and optical systems; sensing and exploitation, fusion, battle management, and autonomy; and cyber security and warfare. Innovations in these areas span the R&D pipeline, from basic research or initial concept development, through prototyping and testing, to program transitions, many of which transition to programs of record or existing product portfolios within ES.

TS collaborates with domain experts from ES’ business areas to research, develop and demonstrate innovative components and subsystems, providing  business discriminators and driving strategic R&D investment trends. TS also partners with government research organizations, industry, and academic institutions to develop and demonstrate innovative system concepts.
