We are continuously looking to attract, recruit, develop and reward people of the highest calibre. At BAE Systems, employees from all backgrounds can fulfil their potential, develop their careers and feel rewarded for what they do.
To support our operations and the industry sectors, we partner with the education system in countries to ensure the future workforce has the core skills and capabilities to develop careers and support industrial strategies. In some of our major markets there is a shortage of qualified engineering and technology graduates. This makes it a business imperative to provide the most competitive opportunities and to invest in initiatives that encourage more young people to study STEM subjects and choose a career in an engineering and technology-led company.
We are investing in developing the next generation of BAE Systems employees. Our apprenticeship and graduate programmes aim to attract a new generation of talent to help our company grow, innovate and compete. In 2016, we welcomed more than 950 apprentices and graduates in to our UK business, resulting in the largest number of people (over 2000) on our multi-year early careers programmes in the Company’s history. The new recruits, most of whom will be trained in engineering roles, will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and learn how to develop cutting edge defence, aerospace and security technologies.
For graduates and undergraduates, we offer tailored opportunities that provide technical training and development through placements, mentoring and further education. Our graduate scheme in Saudi Arabia is regularly oversubscribed and we are increasing the number of places available for our popular 12-week internship in the US. By investing in them, we secure some of the brightest minds to support work in our business.
We also support the UK Government’s Movement to Work initiative by offering four-week placements to provide practical experience for unemployed 18-24 year olds, many of whom go on to become apprentices, find employment or return to education.
Developing our people and creating leaders
We want every employee to fulfil their potential while contributing to the success of the Company. We do this through our career frameworks, comprehensive development programmes and the breadth of our operations around the world that enable employees to make the most of their talents. Our focus is on continuous professional development that supports personal and professional growth.
We continually invest in training and development to help employees achieve their full potential and ensure we maintain the capabilities we need to deliver our strategy and remain competitive.
Employees meet with their managers regularly to plan their career development and identify skills and training opportunities that will help them achieve their goals.
All employees can access programmes that blend e-learning, classroom training and partnerships with academic institutions. We also enable employees to transfer appropriate skills across different areas of the Group.
In the UK, our ‘Leading for Total Performance’ programme is designed to equip our current and future leaders to adapt their leadership styles and approaches to effectively respond to the business strategic priorities and drive performance in a highly competitive and ever changing environment.
Recruiting veterans and reservists
As an international defence, aerospace and security company working in over 40 countries, we need our employees to understand the culture, language and needs of our customers.
BAE Systems values the skills and expertise that veterans and reservists can bring to the business. We actively recruit veterans and reservists and enable them to use their expertise doing mission-based work that suits their experience and supports our business. In the UK, BAE Systems was one of the first major employers to sign the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant, to demonstrate our advocacy and support to the Armed Forces. In the US business, military veterans currently represent 16% of the BAE Systems, Inc. workforce, and nearly 30% of new hires through the first three quarters of 2016. We are also honoured to be ranked among the top 10 on Monster.com’s 2016 ‘Best Company for Veterans’ list and to have earned a 2017 Military Friendly® Employers Designation.
Rewarding our people
We provide our employees with a competitive reward package which reflects their individual job responsibilities and contribution to business performance. We recognise and celebrate individual and team successes through a variety of schemes operated across the business. In addition to learning and career progression opportunities, we offer a range of benefits (including share schemes and retirement plans) as part of a total package which rewards employees fairly and competitively for the job they do.
