As the UK’s largest defence company, we strongly support the development of a sovereign ‘frontier AI’ model – an advanced AI system built and hosted entirely on UK soil. This is about national resilience, security and leadership.

By developing frontier AI here in the UK, we cultivate expertise, create high-skilled jobs and ensure the UK is a leader in responsible AI. We’re not merely consuming innovation – we’re fostering a vibrant, sovereign AI ecosystem.

Having a sovereign AI would ensure that we maintain the use of advanced Artificial Intelligence even in worst-case scenarios. If international communications, such as satellite links or undersea cables were severed, having an AI system on home soil means we would still have access to our AI capabilities. As AI becomes more important for cyber-protection, analysing the sensor data that helps protect our airspace and other national security areas, that ability to have AI fully under our control becomes even more important.

This isn’t just about autonomy, either. It’s about adaptability. A UK-built model can be tailor-made for our operational needs. We would also have the ability to evolve it quickly in response to emerging threats, all without relying on other parties.

This initiative also builds national skills. By developing frontier AI here in the UK, we cultivate expertise, create high-skilled jobs and ensure the UK is a leader in responsible AI. We’re not merely consuming innovation – we’re fostering a vibrant, sovereign AI ecosystem.

Of equal importance is guaranteeing data sovereignty. Having our own AI model means that sensitive defence data can stay within UK jurisdiction, ensuring the highest security standards.
In short, supporting a sovereign AI model means will help us defend, adapt and thrive, no matter what the circumstance. All while building a stronger, future-ready UK.
