The students from O’Connells school were awarded 1st place and each received prizes worth over €500.  All entrants will be eligible for college scholarship money totalling €15,000 to be awarded to outstanding contributors at a later date.

The award was presented by Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, TD who is the Vice Chair of the Committee on Education and Social Protection.

Four teams comprising of Transition Year students from the Dublin inner-city based secondary schools,  Mount Carmel, O’Connells, Synge Street and Warrenmount, participated in a competition that required students to come up with solutions to real world business challenges around the theme of digital security. The students, mentored by professionals from BAE Systems Detica, learned about launching new products from concept to go-to-market and had to pitch their business plan to a panel of judges.

Currently in its 5thyear, BAE Systems Detica’s Education in the Community programme is designed to encourage secondary school students to pursue further education through their participation in the programme, which offers help towards funding at third level college.

Chris Green, Managing Director NetReveal, BAE Systems Detica said:

“BAE Systems Detica is committed to supporting young talent and this competition gives students a snapshot of the potential of developing an IT career in a fast-moving and innovative industry. Once again the standards have been impressively high and O’Connells school is a worthy winner for its  mobile security project.”
