Washington’s compass has Sunderland to the east, the Pennines to the west, Newcastle to the north and Durham to south. It makes for a special place to live, with entertainment, culture, retail and natural beauty readily available in every direction.
Our state-of-the-art munitions plant at Washington was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 2012. Over twenty British and Commonwealth military units use the large-calibre ammunition produced on site.
Our presence in the north east of England follows a long-standing tradition of forging, machining, and treating large-calibre mortar, artillery, and tank ammunition in the region. Similar work has been carried out in the area for over 100 years, when a group of Belgian refugees began delivering supplies to British troops on the front line of World War One.
Our base at Washington is right by the A1(M), easily accessible from locations across Tyne and Wear. We provide a workplace that supports our culture, with facilities that enable our people to deliver great work in a relaxed and creative environment.
Whilst its American namesake has fair claim as the home of the free world, the “Original Washington”, as the town’s sign has it, was home to George Washington’s ancestors, although admittedly they had packed their bags by the 14th century. Alongside a proud industrial history, the town has great restaurants, riverside pubs and leisure facilities. It’s also only 10 miles or so from Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham, so glorious beaches, great nightlife, spectacular countryside, ancient monuments and architectural wonders are all on your doorstep.
