Ryan is a Machine Shop Inspections Supervisor based at Samlesbury.

'I joined as a machinist from another engineering company, and within a year I was promoted into my supervisory role, looking after a team of ten. Working here was always something I wanted to do. I love planes and apart from some time in Australia, I’ve always lived near the site. I’d see the huge planes outside the site every day and that made the business very attractive to me, plus I had friends working here as well. After an initial interview, I was put into the talent pool to be kept up to date with job opportunities and got a call with a job offer a few weeks later.

Straight away once I started here, I told my manager that I was keen to progress and I’ve been really pleased with the opportunities that have been offered to me. I’ve been encouraged to gain new skills and I’ve been pleased to have opportunity to learn how to operate different machines in the workshop. Being new to my supervision role has been challenging, but my manager has helped me get to grips with it and I’m learning how to get the best out of people. Everyone’s very friendly, a lot of us get together socially as well as working together. It’s a good salary and I’m working my way up in the business.

My aim is to get into the engineering side as a manufacturing engineer, working with the product blueprints and bringing them to life. My manager has been really great, she helped me to get into my supervisor’s role, and there’s plenty of support around me to help me progress. There are so many roles here, I know if I decide to have a change from engineering there’s lots of other parts of the business to explore. I lived in Australia before, so if I did want to go back there that’s an option. I know I’ll be fully supported in whatever I decide to do next at BAE Systems.'
