Anastacia is a Typhoon Capability Portfolio Bid Manager based in Warton.
‘It’s thanks to the Movement to Work Scheme that I was able to apply for a job with BAE Systems. After moving to Blackpool in 2014, I attended a work experience program in which I learnt about BAE Systems. After it ended, I was offered a subcontractor role back in the team where I had undertaken my work experience. During that time, I applied for the Advanced Business apprenticeship. I did not have many GCSEs or qualifications, so the apprenticeship route was my best choice.
I completed two years in manufacturing, including Project Control and Production Control, Logistics and Product Safety type work, but I finished still not knowing what exactly I wanted to continue with. After my apprenticeship ended, I started a role as a Business Support Professional within engineering. While doing this, I got the chance to get involved in project management and as a result, this led me to become a Product Environmental Project Controller. After a few years, I then moved from engineering project management to bid management instead.
I am proud to work on Typhoon. I work with upgrades and capability enhancements, which are really impactful and fascinating. A highlight of my career has come recently being able to speak with partner nations and counterparts, trying to build a rapport with those who communicate with different languages and accents. I really enjoy that, although it is a big learning curve too.
I have done a lot of voluntary work as well. I am a Movement to Work Youth Champion, which is really close to my heart. I am also a STEM ambassador and I helped start the Inspiring Women Network. I have had some really supportive managers in the past who have helped me manage all that alongside my day-to-day role. I am passionate about giving back, and my current managers champion me to do so too.
BAE Systems has helped me with my confidence. The encouragement and support from management has helped me realise I can do more than I ever thought.
I have been with BAE Systems for eight years now, and I have been able to undertake the APM PMQ qualification to become a qualified project manager. I am also aiming to complete a degree, which is something I never thought I would ever have the opportunity to do. The career I have found has just fallen into place. I never knew I actually wanted it, but I am glad I have ended up here.'
