What ‘Seeing Potential’ in more diverse candidates has meant for us

BAE Systems is pleased to recently become a partner of the UK Government’s See Potential campaign which encourages employers to think differently about how they recruit and recognise the potential within people regardless of their background.
Ian King, Chief Executive
We at BAE Systems, through our Movement to Work programme, have experienced a wide variety of benefits by welcoming talent from all backgrounds into our business. We are proud to be helping young people who perhaps were previously unclear about their futures, take the first steps in their careers. Movement to Work is a voluntary collaboration of UK employers committed to tackling youth unemployment, through the provision of high quality vocational training and work experience, giving young people the skills and confidence to move into the workplace.

BAE Systems is pleased to recently become a partner of the UK Government’s See Potential campaign which encourages employers to think differently about how they recruit and recognise the potential within people regardless of their background.

Providing work opportunities within your business, as recommended by See Potential, not only benefits recruitment requirements by providing a pipeline of committed employees, but also gives people opportunities that might not have been previously open to them. We believe that offering high quality employment opportunities results in committed employees who help us to deliver a competitive edge and remain successful. Movement to Work (MTW) has also really inspired our existing employees to work with their local communities and other businesses to help give young people a future.

Some of the key business benefits that we and our peers have experienced are:

Sustainable Talent Pipeline – Providing these opportunities facilitates an untapped talent pipeline for young people to join our apprentice and graduate schemes. This helps provide a source of capability to tackle forward-looking business challenges and helps to secure the skill base for future order book placement and fulfilment. It allows us to gain access to candidates that are motivated, talented and loyal and who are passionate to develop a career in the sector.

Workforce Diversity - Supporting young people into the workplace through Movement to Work is additive to existing traditional recruitment strategies. Helping to grow a more diverse and inclusive workforce and recruit individuals with a fresh and different approach to solving problems, further strengthens our business.

Employee Engagement – Our existing employees have been really inspired to help make the placements successful. They have connected with their local communities and embraced the opportunities to develop their own skills, confidence and capabilities through managing the placements.

Community Engagement – BAE Systems has facilitated local employer MTW placement programmes, bringing together the local community to provide further work experience opportunities and strengthening supplier and community relationships through shared values, leading to a more vibrant and integrated local network.

We are passionate about developing the UK’s future talent and feel that it is our job to make sure we have an inclusive workforce, where everyone is given an opportunity to succeed regardless of their background.
