Founded in 2009, Run to Home Base, at Fenway Park in Boston, is hosted in partnership with the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital. Now in its eighth year, the Run to Home Base features a 9K run and 5K walk/run.
During the event we hosted a military appreciation area where participants and spectators made care packages for deployed soldiers serving overseas. Approximately 100 BAE Systems volunteers, including family and friends, helped to assemble more than 1,000 care packages.
In addition to volunteers throughout the event, we had more than 70 employees participate in the 9K/5K races. Following the event, we sponsored the Vietnam Veteran’s Tribute, in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, at the Red Sox vs. Yankees game. We are proud to participate in this important event that raises more than $1 million annually to support the Home Base Veteran rehabilitation program.
The Home Base Program is a joint partnership with the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital. The program leads regional and national efforts to help Post-9/11 service members, veterans from all branches of service including the National Guard and Reserve, and their families heal from the invisible wounds of war like traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress.
“The Home Base Program is doing incredible work for our veterans and their families,” said Lu Goncalves-Getty, director of Community Investment for our Electronic Systems business. “We’re honored to be able to contribute to a program that is helping the lives of the men and women that risk everything for our freedoms.”
We value our partnership with Home Base and the Red Sox Foundation, because many of our employees are veterans or have family members who have served or are currently serving. Throughout the year we work with the Red Sox Foundation to sponsor other events that support the military, like Military Appreciation Weekend and Trees for our Heroes, which together provide activities for more than 500 military families annually.
Later this year, we will partner with Home Base again on the 5th annual Mission: Gratitude, which will take place on October 5, 2017, at the Charlestown Navy Yard. Mission: Gratitude is the largest benefit concert in New England. Last year the event raised more than $1 million to help support the rehabilitation efforts of the Home Base program.
