This nation will remain the land of the free, only so long as it is the home of the brave. Elmer Davis, well-known reporter and author

Why May?

In 1999, the Senate passed a resolution designating May as National Military Appreciation month—a month that honors those who have served and are currently serving to protect our nation.

At BAE Systems, we take this month to heart and mobilize our employee base across the nation to partake in several activities dedicated to supporting our Armed Forces. Check out some of the ways we have recognized this special occasion.

Boston, Massachusetts

Our Boston site sponsored the fourth annual Run/Walk to Home Base at Fenway Park.

More than 2,000 runners and walkers, including 480 active service members, participated in this event. In addition to a corporate sponsorship, our employees volunteered in a number of roles to make the event successful. This year’s event raised nearly $2 million for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Home Base Program – a free and confidential clinic that provides support services to veterans and their families suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Employees at our Minneapolis site held a two-day online auction to raise money to benefit the local Fisher House. The Fisher House Foundation is a nationwide network that provides homes built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. Fisher houses are donated to the military and Department of Veterans Affairs and enable family members to be close to loved ones at the most stressful time – during hospitalization for a combat injury, illness or disease.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Our Hawaii site sponsored a Military Appreciation Day at the Honolulu Zoo.

The event, which was hosted by the local USO and Navy League chapters and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, brought together members of the community for the sole purpose of showing support for our veterans and wounded warriors. We were honored to donate $3,000 to the local Fisher House in conjunction with the event.

California, Maryland

More than 500 of our employees and family members came out to support the “Night at the Ballpark” event. The event, which was held on Military Appreciation Night, included a special military service ceremony that honored several wounded warriors and American heroes.

Endicott, New York

Employees from our Endicott, N.Y. site held a golf tournament called, “Tournament for the Troops.”
Participants in Tournament for the Troops enjoyed their time on the green.

The tournament benefitted the Wounded Warriors and Scholarship Funds of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, stationed at Fort Drum near Watertown, N.Y.

Washington, DC

Our DC-metro area employees partnered with the Armed Services Blood Donor Program Office for a month-long blood drive at the Pentagon Blood Donor Center in Washington, DC.

Throughout Military Appreciation Month, many of our employees participated in the blood drive and gave the gift of life to wounded warriors in need. Additionally, we held our annual “Remember. Honor. Support” 5K Walk/Run, which brought together hundreds of employees from the surrounding area in order to raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation.

Employees, Families, Friends

At the beginning of the month, our Support Solutions (S2) sector asked its employees to submit photos of themselves and family members who have served.

What resulted was a meaningful montage of images that helps us remember and honor those who served and those still serving, as well as their families and friends.

Never Forget

Although May is Military Appreciation Month, we should take a moment every day, of every month, to remember, thank, and honor those who fight to protect us each and every day.
