BAE Systems Engineers Receive Modern Day Technology Leader Award

BAE Systems Engineers Receive Modern Day Technology Leader Award
Test Engineer Keith Boykin and Engineering Technologist Alywin Thompson live more than 1500 miles apart, but they have one thing in common: they excel at what they do.

Keith and Alywin both recently received the Modern Day Technology Leader Award at the 2020 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA). The Modern Day Technology Leader Award recognizes mid-level professionals who help shape the future of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in their careers and communities.

“This award means a lot to me,” Keith said. “The selection process spans industries, and it’s a great honor to be selected.”

Keith began his career at BAE Systems in Austin, Texas two years ago. He spends most of his days developing test program sets (TPSs) for various programs, and recently updated the TPS for a key product – ramping production up to 20,000 units per year.

On the other side of the country in California, Maryland, Alywin develops and recommends technical procedures and methods to support engineers. He joined BAE Systems after a 13-year career in the U.S. Navy as an operations specialist, focusing mainly on air warfare operations.

“I’m proud that as a veteran, I can continue to participate in the defense of our country,” Alywin said. “No two days are the same, and every day brings new and interesting challenges.”

For Keith and Alywin, working at BAE Systems has provided a wealth of opportunities outside of their day job. Alywin has used the tuition reimbursement program to further his education; Keith recently trained a junior engineer in how to integrate and troubleshoot test equipment. Keith’s manager, Jeanne Hoffman, has seen first-hand how his mentorship has benefitted the larger team.

“He’s naturally a mentor. He’s a great asset to any program he’s on, because he just steps in and naturally mentors on things that he knows,” she said.

Keith and Alywin join Souleymane Gnanou—a senior principal engineer in our FAST labs business area and 2019 Modern Day Technology Leader—as BEYA awardees.

“Winning this award is a tremendous honor because I’m being recognized among some of the most talented STEM leaders in the country,” Alywin said. “It lets me know that I’ve made the right career choice and that I’m headed in the right direction.”
