With an increased military focus on over-the-horizon radar technology to support early warning systems and improve defences, our experience highlights how high frequency products can be exported to other nations to help deliver an early warning network against a range of threats and it reinforces our extensive capability and expertise in high frequency radar technology and systems.
Over-the-horizon radar
Australia has one of the best over-the-horizon radars in the world. The system, known as the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), sits at the cutting edge of OTHR technology and is recognised as the world’s best large-scale, long-range surveillance capability.
JORN is not just a radar; it is a sovereign innovation that provides early warning and surveillance over operationally significant ranges that can monitor Australia’s vast northern and western approaches.
In Australia, we are well-known for our critical involvement as the company partnered with the Australian Government to deliver JORN.
We are responsible for both the operational sustainment of the current JORN capability, and the delivery of significant upgrades in surveillance capability encompassing hardware, software and performance upgrades across the network.
Since the beginning, we have supported the development of long-range detection capability with JORN and have continued to enhance and drive the network’s unique technology.
Expertise in high frequency surveillance
Complimentary to our experience with JORN’s over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) system, is our expertise and success in developing and exporting our own high frequency (HF) surveillance technologies.
In contrast to JORN technology, which is owned by the Australian Government, we own the intellectual property of our high frequency technology and exported systems, which has allowed us to iteratively develop and substantially extend its product and technology over the past two decades.
We have been exporting HF technology and systems since 2007. We now serve more than half a dozen international law enforcement and military customers purchasing complete HF subsystems or systems.
Our strong performance on JORN combined with our well-earned reputation in delivery of medium scale high frequency export products has resulted in strong interest in large scale OTHR procurements from Australia’s allies.
We have the know-how to deliver a true end-to-end capability that is unmatched in the high frequency surveillance domain, with our expertise spanning research and development, product development, large scale systems integration and on-site operational support.
Our high frequency sensing products
We have a suite of high frequency (HF) products with full intellectual property ownership.
- A complete portfolio of HF products to deliver OTHR receive systems
- Key HF products and sub-systems for OTHR transmit systems
- A suite of signal processing and sensor management software.
Mk V Receive Systems
Our in-production Mk V Receive System consists of the following core subsystems:
- Front-end receive subsystem
- Back-end receive subsystem
- Timing and calibration subsystem
- Receive control subsystem.
Each one of these subsystems delivers the functionality required to deliver a turnkey receive system that includes:
- Flexibility in receive array design and shelter configurations
- Built in calibration, diagnostics and monitoring functions
- Security protocols for high/low security boundaries.
We have developed five versions or ‘marks’ of our digital receiver. At the end of current orders, we will have deployed 1,500+ Mk V Receivers into six systems across four sites.
Transmit systems
Our in-production Transmit System consist of the following core subsystems:
- Low power drive chain subsystem with either radio frequency or digital waveform generation
- High power drive chain subsystem incorporating third-party high-power amplifier products
- Performance monitoring and diagnostic subsystem utilising the Mk V Receiver
- Timing subsystem
- Transmit control subsystem.
Each one of these subsystems delivers the functionality required to deliver a turnkey transmit system that includes:
- Flexibility in transmit array design and deployment configurations
- Built in diagnostics and monitoring functions
- Security protocols for high/low security boundaries.
We are currently on contract to deliver a latest generation transmit system to an operational site and have already produced and factory tested the low power drive chain subsystem, performance monitoring and diagnostic subsystem, timing subsystem and transmit control subsystem.
Sensor management software
We have also developed a complete suite of over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) software to manage and control all aspects of the receive and transmit subsystems and provide the human-machine interface (HMI) for tasking and managing the radars and detections and tracks.
Frequency management software ensures operators have full awareness of current conditions and integrates coordinate registration software for high accuracy track positions.
Extensive testing has proven it to be a capability multiplier, adaptable, user efficient, and more accurate than anything previously tested with an OTHR real-time signal processor and tracker.
Our leading OTHR sensor management software suite is available to the export market.
