Developing the innovators of tomorrow

BAE Systems Australia JOIN undergraduate scholarship winner, Lachlan Lampard.
We work with universities to support scholarships, internships, undergraduate industry placements and initiatives designed to help industry and academia work together. These partnerships serve to inspire, support and develop Australia’s next generation of engineers and innovators.

Joint Open Innovation Network (JOIN)

BAE Systems Australia’s Joint Open Innovation Network (JOIN) is a national initiative established to drive research, development and innovation of technologies that are critical to supporting the Australian Defence Force maintain superior capability.

Under the initiative, we will contribute up to $10 million to support new university engineering scholarships, internship and undergraduate industry placements. JOIN will also see the establishment of an Innovation laboratory to provide a secure facility that allows industry and academia to work together to advance existing defence technologies.

By investing in tomorrow’s leaders, we help ensure that Defence industry is better able to deliver the unique solutions that the nation needs now and well in the future.

In July Lachlan Lampard, a Software Engineering student from the University of Adelaide, became our first JOIN scholarship recipient. Lachlan will receive $5000 each year for the next 3 years to support his second, third and final year engineering studies, as well as 12 weeks of vacation employment, access to a company mentor, and pre-selection for interview for a BAE Systems graduate position.

Lachlan is a high academic achiever, who enjoys listening to music, travelling and sport, and is a huge Adelaide Crows football supporter. He was attracted to engineering because of the scope it provided to be innovative and creative and be able to apply maths and science to solve important problems which can have a real impact in the world.

“The prospect of working within an ever-changing field that will continually present different and interesting challenges excites me.”

“The BAE Systems JOIN Scholarship has given me the opportunity to be associated with Australia’s largest defence and security company and given me the self-belief and extra motivation to strive for success.”

Next Generation School & University Scholarships Program (NEXSUS)

NEXSUS scholar

Our company has partnered with the University of Newcastle to offer scholarship opportunities through our Next-generation Student and University Scholarship (NEXSUS) program, which combines work placement with study.

NEXSUS program opportunities are created every year and offered through local school and university scholarship schemes. These are offered to individual senior high school or university students who are enrolled in subjects that underpin STEM.

Each scholar is allocated a BAE Systems mentor to provide industry coaching and the program can include support towards tutoring, training, conference attendances and, most commonly, undertaking an industry experience pathway while studying.

We welcomed our first scholarship recipient, Connie Dixon, in 2016 when she was a fourth-year mechanical engineering student. As part of Connie’s NEXSUS experience, she spent 18 weeks undertaking work experience with our Hawk Lead-In Fighter team at Williamtown.

“Everyone has been so welcoming and willing to help out. The scholarship provides a fantastic opportunity for engineering students to get a foot in the door with industry.”
