Successor
We are the industrial lead for the Successor programme and, alongside partners Rolls Royce and Babcock Marine, are designing a new generation of submarines to carry the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent.
They will replace the current Vanguard class, which was also designed and constructed at BAE Systems’ site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, with the first new submarine scheduled to enter service in 2028.
A decision on the number of submarines is not expected before Main Gate in 2016, which is when the Government will decide whether or not to approve full production.
Where are we now?
Work on the concept design phase has been ongoing since 2007, but this has now completed, and an outline submarine design has been selected.
Following the Government's approval of the Initial Gate Business Case in May, 2011, the programme moved into the Assessment Phase, which is the first major stage of the new submarine’s design and development. This is where the vessel concept and requirements are fleshed out and finalised into a detailed hull form and systems.
Focus is now on achieving Main Gate in 2016 by delivering a design of sufficient maturity to start construction.
Creating jobs
This major programme will see an employment boost with BAE Systems looking to recruit upwards of 200 new employees, particularly in its Engineering function. The roles include: Electrical, Mechanical and Structural Engineers, Engineering Managers and Naval Architects, along with Project Managers.
