BAE Systems is the prime contractor for the Seawolf Mid-Life Update (SWMLU) programme which includes a significant radar update, the addition of an electro-optical channel to complement the radar trackers and the implementation of advanced sensor fusion techniques. The operational software is being updated and rehosted onto new hardware and a redesigned human computer interface will maximise operator effectiveness.
We have evolved capability from the Commander AR327 radar, used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Proven in real operational conditions and extreme environments, the robust, solid-state Commander SL radar system provides high availability with superior, reliable performance.
Operational with the Royal Navy since 1998, the Type 996 radar is fitted to Type 42 Destroyers, Type 23 Frigates, aircraft carriers and assault ships. It provides surveillance for air picture compilation and target data for point defence missile systems.
It is being replaced by the Artisan (Advanced Radar Target Indication Situational Awareness and Navigation) 3D radar which offers unrivalled detection performance and world beating electronic protection measures. Artisan 3D will increase primary sensing capability performance on a number of the Royal Navy’s platforms.
