On December 31, 2013, the company was awarded a $19M contract modification for MK21 MOD 3 (SM-6) canisters, with associated assemblies. On March 31, 2014, the company was also awarded a $21M contract modification for MK14 MOD 2 canisters, MK14 MOD 2 upgrades, and MK21 MOD 2 canisters, with associated assemblies. Both contracts were in support of MK41 VLS canister production requirements.  Work for both awards will take place at the company’s Aberdeen, S.D. and Minneapolis, Minn. facilities and is expected to be completed by early 2016.

VLS missile canisters provide a sealed storage, transportation, and launch container for a wide range of system-compatible weapons. The VLS Mk 41 canister envelope is common to system launcher module standards, while internal mechanical and electrical components are tailored to specific weapon shape and interface requirements.

With these contracts, the full value of FY 14 canister Option awards has now increased to $43.4M, and the total contract value to $85.1M.

“BAE Systems has been manufacturing VLS canister and launcher module assemblies for over 25 years,” said Tom Callies, BAE Systems’ VLS Canister Program Manager. “This continuing support of our Navy’s requirements provides critical equipment necessary to meet the needs of Sailors and the fleet. We are proud to be able to contribute to the U.S. Navy’s world class capability in protecting our country and her allies from harm.”

The Mk41 VLS contract is a five-year contract (base plus options), covering FY13 through FY17 Canister requirements for the Navy.  Additional option awards are expected for FY15 through FY17, with the period of performance carrying out through 2019.
