Sigma Leadership Programme

Red Arrows
Our world-class high potential programme created for future business and engineering leaders.

Programme Overview

The Sigma Leadership Programme is our three year fast-track programme created for people with the highest leadership potential. With only a few places available each year, it’s unique, quick paced and aimed at giving individuals a breadth and depth of knowledge from across multiple business areas.

There are two streams within the programme; business and engineering. Each is tailored to ensure that you develop the core skills and behaviours to be a business or engineering leader of the future.

Fully endorsed at Board level, the Sigma Leadership Programme offers no blue print or structured path to follow, so each Sigma member is responsible for their own journey around the business and development plan.

Arranging your own placements, which will typically last between 6-12 months, you might find yourself undertaking an international assignment, or working on one of our customer sites. Through secondments to different business areas and projects, our members rapidly gain a diverse range of competencies, knowledge and experience. All Sigma placements are hands-on. They are purposely both stretching and intensive, designed to give members real accountability and responsibility for making a difference to our businesses. To succeed you’ll need to be driven and self-motivated.

At the conclusion of the Sigma Leadership Programme, Sigma members are expected to take on substantive role at an executive level.

Your Learning & Development

From the outset, you’ll be invited to the Business or Engineering Sigma Steering Groups which provide a forum for Sigmas to discuss their development plans for the scheme with senior leaders within the business and to seek advice regarding future roles.

In addition, you will be assigned your own personal buddy - a current Sigma - who’ll support you in your transition onto the scheme. Your manager will also collaborate with you on a personal development plan, which will set out your professional goals for the first year and how to achieve them.

Over the long term, you’ll also have both a corporate and functional mentor to guide your development and leadership skills. Additionally, there's financial and practical support to gain further relevant qualifications and accreditations within either business or engineering. Engineers are expected to gain chartered engineer status; the Sigma programme is accredited by a number of relevant institutions. From our perspective, it represents a major, long-term investment in real leadership potential.

Sigma workshops are run regularly, which provide an opportunity for all Sigmas to convene and engage in activities designed to develop their understanding of an element of the business. Recent workshops include Leading from the Inside Out, Building High Performance Teams and Environmental Sustainability. Sigmas are also responsible for organising less formal “Learning Sets” to further develop relevant skills & understanding.

Additional activities are encouraged whilst on the Sigma Leadership Programme as an additional means of development. This may be undertaking a role as a STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) Ambassador, contributing to corporate working groups or writing group strategy & policy. Community Investment projects are also undertaken, which have recently included revamping a hospice and taking part in the Prince’s Trust Million Makers Challenge.
