Finance underpins everything we do – so it’s vital that we find and nurture our future finance leaders now. That’s why we created the Finance Leader Development Programme (FLDP).
The FLDP is our five-year graduate entry scheme, designed specifically for high-calibre individuals with the potential and determination to make a real difference in senior finance roles.
As a graduate on the FLDP, you can expect a role that offers significant responsibility from the very beginning. In the first three years, you'll complete three 12-month placements at a range of geographical locations across the UK, gaining extensive experience of financial accounting and reporting, management accounting and project accounting whilst completing your CIMA qualification. Following this you’ll commence a two year senior accountancy position, usually offering managerial experience, helping you to develop the skills you will require to move into a leadership role within our dynamic finance arena at the end of the programme. As you progress, you’ll soon understand why the FLDP is so enthusiastically championed by finance members and board directors alike.
To ensure that your experience is structured and best assists your personal development, there are a number of stages to the FLDP as well as a comprehensive support network. To help you understand some of the steps and levels of support you’ll encounter, we’ve outlined the main ones below:
As soon as you accept an offer of employment at BAE Systems and are allocated your first year role, you’ll then be assigned a ‘buddy’ – someone on the FLDP, and usually based at your first year placement location, who’ll be there to help you settle in and find your way around. You’ll also have the chance to visit the location of your first FLDP placement and meet the team there.
Prior to the start of your first placement, you’ll benefit from a week-long residential induction. This includes an introduction to BAE Systems, some finance training, team building activities and a chance to meet both existing FLDP graduates and senior finance personnel.
Then, it’s into a great five-year programme, which will give you three year-long placements followed by a two-year placement, each being within a different part of our business and in a different geographical location. This will ensure you gain a breadth of experience across our many sites, projects and cultures, all of which will contribute to your portfolio of skills and experience.
In the first three years, your training will be focused on helping you attain your CIMA qualification. Our comprehensive CIMA study package includes support worth over £15,000 and over 14 weeks’ of study leave.
You’ll be allocated a corporate mentor who’ll be there with all sorts of advice and guidance regarding your career.
Conference and Workshops
You’ll attend workshops aimed at developing your interpersonal skills and providing you with an opportunity to network with other finance professionals. Enabling you to share knowledge as you go along is extremely important to us. So, you’ll be attending our annual Finance Leaders Development Conference as well as your individual year group workshops.
Health, Wellbeing and Social Activities
Our Employee Assistance Programme is a health and wellbeing benefit, offering immediate access to 24hr telephone counselling, legal and information services at no cost to our employees. From a social side of things, you could get involved in our charity and team events such as the 3 Peaks Challenge, or sign up for one of our many sports and social activities that take place across our sites.
Corporate Social Responsibility
In 2014, we contributed over £11.3m globally through company donations and sponsorships, employee fundraising, payroll giving and volunteering time and skills. You too could get involved and help us make a difference to many important causes around the world.
You’ll also get the chance to attend university careers fairs and presentations. And once you have graduated from the scheme you will have the opportunity to give back to the scheme by becoming a Mentor to new starters on the FLDP.

We’ll encourage and support you to reach your full potential and you’ll receive world-class training and support. The FLDP is our key to developing future finance leaders for BAE Systems. The programme will give you all the tools to succeed, you will undertake regular performance and development appraisals, and receive a senior mentor to provide you with support and guidance along the way.
In order to maximise the development of talent, we use the 70-20-10 Development Model; the most effective way to plan development is to focus 70% on experience, 20% on Exposure and 10% on Education.
We provide regular FLDP workshops, an annual conference, superb e-learning facilities and stretch assignment opportunities. You will have access to our Knowledge, Skills and Competency Gap Analysis tool, and you’ll receive a development 360 feedback report on an annual basis.
Once you’re into your fourth and fifth year of the programme and are CIMA qualified, you will receive an allocation of 20 days for training and development, some of which will be used to attend our well established People Management Toolkit course and Professional Development Centre, with the remaining days being tailored to you as an individual.
After five years on the FLDP, you will be a highly skilled member of the finance community. That’s a huge benefit in itself. But, as you go along, you’ll find out just how dedicated the company is to making sure you have every possible support and opportunity to learn more.
