Winner of Lovie Award for transforming Transport for London’s online presence

Lovie Awards
BAE Systems Applied Intelligence has won the People’s Lovie Award for Best Government and Civic website in recognition of its work transforming Transport for London’s (TfL) digital presence.

The TfL website receives nearly 250 million visits a year, making it one of the most highly visited transportation sites in the world. Each month, eight million travellers plan their journeys into and around the capital using the site.
The Lovie Awards are the only pan-European award to honour the entire breadth of content created for the internet. The TfL site has been recognised in two categories in the 2014 awards; with the Government and Civic category being awarded to BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, and TfL also receiving an award in the best user experience category.

BAE Systems Applied Intelligence worked with TfL to transform its journey planner service in tandem with the creation of a brand new, state-of-the-art website that has improved the way that millions of Londoners and visitors plan their journeys and travel around the city.

The awards won by BAE Systems Applied Intelligence and TfL reflect the sophisticated mobile-first approach taken when rebuilding the TfL website.

BAE Systems Applied Intelligence working closely with TfL’s in-house team and other suppliers, incorporating a range of innovative capabilities to create a world class digital experience across all devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops.

In the ten weeks following the launch of the new site, TfL saw journey planner visits increase by ten per cent, while weekday traffic from mobile devices soared fifty four per cent.

A new ‘nearby’ function was also launched to provide real time updates across all local transport modes, from Barclays Cycle Hire to the Tube. This enabled a seamless digital and user friendly planning experience across multiple platforms.

An interactive version of the London Tube Map was also developed where sections can be highlighted in real time, enabling users to easily see and interact with the latest updates relevant to their journey.

In addition the website supports TfL’s Open Data policy through the creation of a single, externally facing API (application programming interface) which is used by over 5,100 developers.

This API promotes the Government’s Open Data agenda for increasing economic growth by offering 3rd party developers high quality, live TfL data to support hundreds of travel applications and helping millions of people every day.

Julian Cracknell, Managing Director of UK Services at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, said:

“Millions of people rely on TfL every day to get them to the right place at the right time – whether Londoners, business visitors or tourists. Providing up to the minute travel information and reliable journey planning tools makes this a much easier process and we are delighted that the new website that we helped TfL to deliver is making a real difference to people’s lives. This award is recognition of the real impact that digital transformation projects can have when they combine great design with a customer-focused approach.”

Phil Young, Head of TfL Online, said:

“It really is fantastic to have such a positive response to our new and improved website.  When we redesigned it last year we put our customer’s needs at the heart of what we wanted to deliver, to provide something that would help them make the most out of all forms of transport in London. They wanted a site that offered richer information and was easier to use on the go.  As a result we delivered something great for mobile devices, location aware and comprehensive, making it an essential travelling companion.”

The award win builds upon the appointment of BAE Systems Applied Intelligence as TfL’s lead digital partner in 2011. BAE Systems Applied Intelligence will be responsible for providing a managed service for the ongoing support of the TfL site.
