Electronic Systems Builds on Growing Regional Success with Exhibition at IDEX
ES promotes its cutting-edge technologies at IDEX

Demonstrating BAE Systems’ ongoing support of the United Arab Emirate’s current and future defence and security requirements, the Electronic Systems sector of BAE Systems showcased its range of core innovation technologies in Abu Dhabi at this year’s IDEX event.  This tri-service defence exhibition has been an annual event since 1993. BAE Systems, as part of the Eurofighter consortium, has had significant regional exposure to this tier one show since its inception in 1993.

BAE Systems’ presence at this prestigious event signals the growing importance of the region as a major investment hub and a key export market for the company. Electronic Systems’ ‘showcase’ display featured its industry-leading capabilities, covering the following sector business areas:  Communications & Control Solutions’ (CCS), Survivability & Targeting Solutions’ (STS) and Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance Solutions (ISR).

CCS highlighted its integrated display and sighting technologies, including the Q-Sight™ and LiteHUD display systems, as well as its network-centric waveform product, the Link 16. STS profiled its special mission aircraft capability, the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) rocket, and Electronic Systems’ OASYS subsidiary showcased its range of weapons operations capabilities, including the SkeetIR®, StalkIR® and Universal® Thermal Binocular thermal imaging products. The Identification Friend & Foe (IFF), Airborne Wide Area Persistent Surveillance System (AWAPS) and Reduced Size Transponder (RST) interrogation responder and sensory equipment featured as significant sector technology exhibits in the ISR product range.

Demonstrating the company’s strength in industry collaboration and programme partnership, the Striker helmet-mounted display – a revolutionary head-up and eyes out capability developed by BAE Systems as part of an European-led consortium programme effort for Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft was featured on the Eurofighter stand. The helmet exhibit was supported by an actual full-scale replica of a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet which took centre stage in the outside display area. In addition, the APKWS rocket featured as a technology showcase in the Bell Helicopter stand, underscoring our excellent programme partnership credentials at this year’s regional defence show

A high profile media briefing on Typhoon capability and enhancements took place on Day 2 of the conference.  Eurofighter CEO Enzo Casolini was joined by Alan Jowett, Electronic Systems’ business development lead for fast-jet avionics, and Wing Commander Anthony “Foxy” Gregory – MoD, for a briefing on the helmet.  The presentation was followed by demonstrations to reporters, representing the local, regional and trade media outlets. The coverage generated from this regional trade show media activity was widespread and appeared extensively in the print, online, and broadcast news channels.

Whilst reporters of an influential background attended a Eurofighter-hosted press event, the resulting coverage and article tone was balanced, with favourable mentions given to the helmet technology developed by BAE Systems. Numerous press mentions appeared in the following outlets, Al Defaiya, Al Khaleej, Arabian Aerospace, Armada International, Shephard media, Jane’s Defence Weekly, Battlespace News, Nation Shield and Arab Defence Journal, Asian Military Review, sdarabia.com, Al-Musallh Magazine, The Security Review, and MSI Magazine.

Show highlights included visits to the BAE Systems stand from regional defence heavyweights including the U.S. Ambassador to the UAE Michael Corbin and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

BAE Systems’ support of IDEX in the UAE meets its international brand effort to strengthen its corporate credentials in key defence export markets, adding to its growing regional profile. Private investment in the region is becoming increasingly popular, boosting its geographical importance and role in defence export transactions. BAE Systems’ focus in the UAE is further cemented with its existing partnerships and regional alliances, coupled with the company’s deeply embedded roots in the Middle East’s scientific and cultural heritage, supporting the local governments’ 2030 vision.
