BAE Systems-Led Team Helps FEMA Earn Recognition for Disaster Assistance Program

October 27 2010

ARLINGTON, Virginia – A BAE Systems-led team helped the Federal Emergency Management Agency earn the distinction of having one of the ten best federal information technology programs. FEMA won recognition for technology that helps disaster victims file claims easier and faster from a computer or smart phone.

The Government Computer News award honors IT initiatives that improve an agency’s ability to operate efficiently and serve the public effectively. FEMA’s Disaster Assistance Improvement Program (DAIP), which allows survivors of natural disasters to apply for federal aid on a smart phone or computer, was selected from nearly 100 entrants. The award will be presented at GCN’s 23rd annual black-tie gala this evening.

DAIP features a site,, that allows users to see if they are eligible for benefits, file a claim; and check for updates. For example, communities, businesses and families impacted by the recent oil spill in the Gulf can find out what they need to make a claim. The site significantly improves the way applications are handled. An independent FEMA survey showed that 98 percent of those who used would recommend it to others.

“Nobody wants to see their homes destroyed when a disaster hits,” said Tom Sechler, a vice president and general manager in the Intelligence & Security sector. “But with this kind of program, FEMA can respond aggressively with aid when all hope seems lost, and bring some sense of normalcy back to peoples’ lives.”

BAE Systems is the prime contractor supporting the DAIP Program Management Office. The undertaking involved bringing together seventeen federal agencies that provide emergency assistance, including the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration.
