The leases have been signed with state land authority LandCorp and the Fremantle Port Authority for 25 years and 17 years respectively.
Director Maritime, Bill Saltzer said the agreements reinforced the commitment BAE Systems was making to its defence, resources and commercial customers in Western Australia.
“The seabed lease and the renewal of the shorefront land at Henderson is significant to the next phase of growth for the company,” he said.
“As part of our commitment, we will invest more than $20 million in the facility that will include a new office building, shiplift upgrades and additional rail facilities. The agreements and the investment in the Henderson operation will enable BAE Systems grow its business in new and adjacent markets.
“In the past year, we have made significant improvements to the site including resurfacing and sealing of the 14.5 hectare yard, completion of the upgrade and extension works to the existing dry berths, construction of an additional dry berth and upgrade and extension of the main dry berth.”
Mr Saltzer said that only three years ago BAE Systems Henderson facility had less than 60 employees but since then the company had reviewed its target markets and realigned the business to support growth into new markets, including the resource sector.
“The resources and energy projects along with commercial and defence ship repairs currently underway, has boosted employment at the site - we now have a workforce of over 500.
“Together with LandCorp and with the guidance of the WA Department of Commerce, BAE Systems is pleased to make a long-term commitment to its future at Henderson.”
