Apprentice enters final race for national glory

Nichola Mitchell
Nichola Mitchell, one of our Procurement engineers, was today named in the final three for the ‘National Apprenticeship Champion of the Year’

Nichola, who works on the F-35 programme, at Samlesbury in Lancashire, was nominated because of her achievements in our company since finishing her apprenticeship and because of her efforts championing apprenticeships.

About Nichola

The 22-year-old from Wigan will discover if she has been successful during the National Apprenticeship Awards at The Skills Show in Birmingham on 14 November.

Before then her fate will be decided by a public vote, which will come to a close on Friday, 18 October.

What this means to Nichola

She said: “I was delighted when I heard the news that I was through to the last three and it’s great to be able to represent BAE Systems at this national stage because the company has been so supportive towards me.

“Now, I need the support of all the people of the North West to help me win the overall public vote.”

Meaningful hands on experience

Nichola continued, ““My apprenticeship was the best possible career choice I could have made because it allowed me to get meaningful hands on experience.

“It also allowed me to work out what my strengths and weaknesses were before making a firm choice on what I actually wanted to do and it has provided me with the foundations to a really exciting career. What I am trying to do now is encourage more young people to consider taking up an apprenticeship. I believe apprenticeships are exciting and can be life-changing.  My aim is to be a positive role model for potential apprentices and I use my passion, commitment and enthusiasm to actively promote apprenticeships across the country.”
