ATIRCM provides passive warning of missile approach using the common missile warning system (CMWS), which detects the missile, rejects false alarms, and cues the onboard infrared jamming system’s jam head to the missile’s location. When the jam head finds the missile with its IR tracking system, it emits a high-energy infrared beam to defeat the missile’s infrared seeker.

The ATIRCM system was developed as the result of a partnership between the U.S. Army and BAE Systems to counter the threat of shoulder-fired weapons known as ManPortable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), which are heat-seeking missiles that sense the infrared energy generated by the heat of an aircraft engine. The system has demonstrated its effectiveness against this threat with more than 85,000 logged combat hours on numerous platforms and in various environments. Demonstrating its dependability, ATIRCM has tested several times over the reliability requirement, setting the benchmark and surpassing U.S. Army expectations.
