AN/AAR-57 common missile warning system (CMWS)

AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System
CMWS provides missile warning for rotary-and fixed-wing aircraft.

In today’s battlefield, infrared missiles are increasing in sophistication and proliferation. It is crucial to be able to defeat these threats, which are often unobserved and can strike in seconds. Keeping up with the evolving threats typically challenges the effectiveness of missile warning systems, but CMWS has proven its ability to respond in these situations to protect both aircraft and crews.

Superior detection

  • Compatible with existing chaff, flare and RF decoy dispensers, and laser DIRCM systems
  • Over 2,100 systems installed on fixed –wing and rotary-wing aircraft
  • Flown more than 2 million combat theatre flight hours
  • Hostile fire indication capabilities
  • Enables data recording capabilities for post-mission analysis
  • Can be used as a centralized processing system for Integrated Aircraft Survivability Equipment

Program performance

The U.S. Army called with an urgent need, and BAE Systems answered with a viable solution. CMWS was fielded in 2006, and since that time, more than 2,000 systems have been delivered and installed on more than 30 different platforms. Designed for a wide variety of aircraft, the system features line-replaceable units that can be switched out in three to five minutes on the flight line – without the need for special tools or test equipment. With more than 2 million combat hours and the ability to customize algorithms to adapt to new threats, CMWS has proven its adaptability and versatility in various situations.

BAE Systems highly values customer relationships, providing continuous product support and incorporating user feedback to enhance products. As a result of customer feedback, CMWS continues to evolve, as it builds on the success of existing technology. The most recently developed, third-generation system’s technology integrates hostile fire indication, missile warning, and data recording capabilities into one unit. This innovation allows the detection of small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. It also enables new data recording capabilities for detailed post-mission analysis. CMWS is credited with saving dozens of lives, delivering enhanced integration and survivability capabilities.
