Education awards recognise young engineer

Awards were handed out in ten separate categories after a panel of judges had the daunting task of sifting through a host of deserving entrants in the second Lancashire Evening Post Education Awards.

This year we sponsored the Young Scientist/Engineer category and Ian Wood, Samlesbury Site Director, presented the award to winner Nikhil Reji from Corpus Christi Catholic Sports College.

Shortlisted nominee

Nikhil was one of three shortlisted nominees and took the award for a number of reasons, not least the way he calmly solves problems and manages practical projects. The teen has been described as being gifted and talented in design and technology, and has represented his school at engineering tournaments. Teachers say he has an outstanding aptitude for a range of engineering disciplines from 2D and 3D CAD, to welding, riveting and electronics. Nikhil who sat his Edexcel engineering exam a year early is hoping to make a career in engineering.

Investing in Education initiatives

Ian Wood said: “Education is very important to BAE Systems and that’s why every year we invest millions in education initiatives. The Awards tonight give a real recognition to achievement and celebrate the vigour and determination of a region that has a real commitment to education on a number of levels.
