Local employee in the running for young woman engineer of the year

Philippa Riddoch in the running for young woman engineer of the year
Philippa Riddoch, a BAE Systems Manufacturing Engineer working on the F-35 programme in Lancashire has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Young Woman of the Year Awards run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The award recognises the very best female engineers under the age of 30 in the UK.

“I was shocked to hear I’d made it as a finalist – it’s a nice surprise.  I come to work every day to be an engineer, I’ve been doing it so long now and I find it just comes naturally.  To get this kind of recognition is fantastic, especially if it helps encourage other young women to believe that engineering is a real option for them.”

Philippa aged 25, from Chorley began work at BAE Systems in 2005 as an apprentice and currently works as an improvement engineer on the F-35 programme.  It’s Philippa’s passion for engineering that overshadows any worries about being treated differently by her fellow team-mates.  She doesn’t see herself any differently to any of the other engineers in the team.  Her spirit of enthusiasm doesn’t stop in work either. Philippa has also represented the UK in ice hockey championships around the world.

When Philippa talks to other young women who are aspiring to start a career in engineering, she doesn’t spend time debating how you should adapt to being in a man’s world.  She just says:  “If you love what you do and you’re good at it that’s all you need.”

She adds “I’ve worked in many different environments and sometimes I’ve been the only female in the area but that’s never been an issue as an engineer is an engineer; no matter what their gender. When that’s the attitude you’re met with every day, you don’t have to worry about anything.  You can enjoy it and focus on doing your job the best you can.”

Winners will be invited to a prestigious national ceremony in London on 6 December 2012.  To find out more about the awards go to the IET website.
