BAE Systems Applied Intelligence will develop, manage and run a face to face competition, as well as creating a series of technical challenges and providing a number of its experts as assessors for the series of competitions that make up the Challenge.

Now in its sixth year, the Cyber Security Challenge UK incorporates a range of competitions, including a schools specific programme, and is backed by over 50 sponsors from across government, industry and academia. With sponsor support the Challenge has handed out hundreds of thousands of pounds of career-enabling prizes to the UK’s leading amateur cyber defenders.

BAE Systems recruits hundreds of graduates a year for careers across its business, ranging from heavy engineering to aerospace and cyber security. In 2014, over a third of its graduate intake - around 120 out of 287 - joined BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, to help companies and organisations protect themselves and their customers from fraud, cyber attack and digital criminality.
This reflects a wider demand within the UK for cyber security skills. According to UK government figures, the UK cyber security sector is worth over £6 billion and employs 40,000 people. In addition to national demands, the cyber export market grew from £850 million to over £1 billion during 2013, and is expected to reach £2 billion by 2016.

Kevin Taylor, Managing Director, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, said:

“The Cyber Security Challenge UK is fundamental to the creation of both a strong cyber security industry and a strong UK cyber defence. The global rise in digital criminality requires all cyber security organisations to recruit the best and brightest to protect governments, organisations and businesses from attack. We’ve seen incredible growth in our cyber security business over the last few years – reflected by our significant graduate recruitment. We are looking forward to supporting and furthering the efforts of this initiative.”

Stephanie Daman, Chief Executive Officer, Cyber Security Challenge UK, said:

“As one of the best-known names in the UK defence industry, and one of the largest cyber security providers, we are extremely happy to welcome BAE Systems Applied Intelligence as a sponsor and contributor to the Challenge. BAE Systems Applied Intelligence is a significant recruiter of talent in the UK and abroad, and offers excellent prospects to those looking for a career in this exciting and demanding field.”
