The ATC Experimental Impact Centre has developed over the past 20 years and now offers a comprehensive range of capabilities for the investigation of impact phenomena and dynamic material behaviour. Detailed study of carefully designed and controlled experiments provides the fundamental observations necessary to understand impact processes.
Precise data obtained from tests may be used by engineers and designers to develop structures and components where impact damage is kept to a minimum.
An important role of the facility is to support Finite Element analysis of dynamic events. High strain rate and shock material characterisation capabilities are used to provide fundamental materials data and well-instrumented impact tests make it possible to compare and validate simulations and experiments to a high degree of accuracy.
