The introduction of new technology, new operating procedures or new manning levels (such as a reduction in the number of personnel manning a system) will have an impact upon the human role within a system and the tasks which they perform.
Although the goal is to maintain or improve overall system performance, the introduction of new technology and/or operating procedures can have a negative impact on human workload levels. This can mean both an increase in workload to a point which affects performance or a decrease which results in problems associated with vigilance levels, again affecting performance.
