These include Day-Night-All-Weather and ruggedised sensors,hyper-spectral/polarimetric and radar waveform design technologies and counter-stealth techniques such as low-frequency and multi-static systems.
In the modern battlefield survivability depends on minimising detection, maximising awareness of threats, and then dealing with those threats.
Our research programmes address solutions to deliver against each of these three areas.
We offer solutions to understand, manage and minimise platform signatures so as to avoid detection. We develop sensor systems such as Electronic Surveillance Measures (ESM), radar warning and/or IR receivers which help to detect threats, as well as the decoys, counter measures and armour with which threats can be addressed.
Our knowledge of electro-magnetic and plasma combat supports the development of technology capable of disrupting and disabling enemies' offensive systems.
With the current trend to medium-weight rapid reaction forces, there is an increasing requirement for electronic protection, or ‘e-armour’. We offer solutions through our expertise in front-end hardening and adaptive pre-selection filtering to deliver effective protection to our armed forces.
The successful Detection, Recognition & Identification of difficult targets relies on having the most appropriate sensors. With our detailed knowledge of the design and use of sensors coupled with the ability to model and measure sensor performance,we are ideally placed to deliver solutions for this important function.
With increasing demands on platform space and performance, multifunction RF Systems allow common assets to be shared between several applications. We use fundamentally new approaches to antenna and RF front-end design to significantly reduce the weight, space and power requirements of these systems, whilst improving operational flexibility, operational life and through-life costs.
At an individual platform level, our expertise in miniature sensors provides a unique capability in structural health and usage monitoring. Technologies encompass fibre-optical strain sensors which can be embedded into materials to create smart structures; damage-detection sensors which give structures the ability to selfdiagnose potential issues and novel sensors, sources and antennas for bespoke IR measurement. Solutions can be derived and tailored to support military or commercial applications.
