Human Factors Integration
Human Factors Integration (HFI) is a UK MoD programme which aims to ensure that the human related aspects of design, development and support are appropriately addressed throughout the lifecycle of a system.
HFI consists of a systematic process for identifying, tracking and resolving human related issues to ensure a balanced development of both technological and human aspects of capability. Although the initiative's roots are in the military world, both in the UK and the US (under the original title 'MANPRINT'), the philosophy and associated techniques can be applied to the development and support of any complex system.
The ATC's Human Factors Department has developed processes, techniques and tools which support the application of Human Factors Integration and, in particular, the adoption of a human-centred approach to system design. This includes the identification and definition of the system 'target audience' (the users and support personnel associated with the system), the identification and analysis of user requirements, tools to support the rapid prototyping of design concepts, and methods and tools to assess (both subjectively and quantifiably) human performance during system evaluation.
