EMMA_F:FM3D is a full-field solver within the BAE Systems' EMMA (ElectroMagnetic Modelling Applications) suite of electromagnetic modelling codes. The EMMA full-field solvers provide a consistent solution to the complete form of Maxwell's equations in the time or frequency domain.

The BAES FM3D code is based on the Multi-level Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA), which is an extension of the Boundary Element Method/Method of Moments (MoM/BEM). Operating in the frequency domain, the MoM/BEM is an accurate approach for solving a wide range of electromagnetic problems including scattering, antenna radiation, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic hazard (EMH) analyses.

However, the technique is limited to systems of moderate size due to the dense linear matrix operations involved. The MLFMA is an extension of the MoM/BEM to much larger systems. By sparsifying the far-field interactions within the matrix-vector multiplication process, the memory storage requirements and solve time are drastically reduced.

This allows large, complex problems to be tackled using current computing power.
