Mongoose Explosive Standoff Minefield Breaching System

Mongoose is the countermine breaching system of the future. It is a rocket-deployed array of countermine shaped charges, launched across the minefield and command-detonated to provide a high-confidence cleared lane for mounted Army forces. The system was developed by BAE Systems for the U.S. Army Project Manager – Close Combat Systems (PM-CCS).

Mongoose will provide 95% confidence of cleared lane with an array 70m x 3.3m configured for the Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the Engineer Squad Vehicle.  Mongoose will meet all requirements for deployability and transportability, including C-130 transport. The BAE Systems Countermine Shaped Charge is the heart of Mongoose. The tailored jet of the countermine shaped charge is configured to penetrate to buried mines and deliver sufficient explosive energy to detonate, destroy, or neutralize virtually all known anti-vehicle mines.

Mongoose launches from behind a Stryker ESV

Mongoose development is complete, and the system awaits final qualification. Mongoose will give the U.S. Army the world’s most effective countermine breaching system.

  • All-weather / all-terrain assured mobility
  • Stryker Brigade Combat Team and C-130 compatible
  • Rocket-deployed array of countermine shaped charges
  • Will replace the obsolete Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC)
  • Effective against all known mines and mine-fuze combinations

Background

Mongoose SDD builds upon the successful Explosive Standoff Minefield Breacher program. It builds logically from component to subscale and full-scale flight tests, ending with Army qualification, operational testing, and fielding to Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

The Mongoose Team includes the U.S. Army Engineer School, the TRADOC Systems Manager for Engineer Combat Systems, and the U.S. Army Project Manager for Close Combat Systems. Additional technical expertise is provided by the U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, U.S. Army TACOM Armament Research Development and Engineering Center, and the U.S. Navy Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head.

Under prime contractor Total System Performance responsibility, BAE Systems has assembled the definitive industry team to meet the challenges of Mongoose. The team includes ATK, AAR Mobility Systems, Stewart & Stevenson, DE Technologies, American Ordnance, L3 Electrodynamics, and Shock Tube Systems.
