Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Systems
In peacetime or during conflict, it is critical to maintain a situational awareness that distinguishes friendly forces from hostiles or unknowns. BAE Systems’ identification friend or foe (IFF) systems enable friendly forces to recognize friendly platforms among potential targets in the battle space. This information provides critical lead time to counter an attack or prevent fratricide between friendly and/or coalition forces.
IFF employs U.S.- and NATO-adopted Mark XIIA Mode 5 secure message formats to positively identify coalition forces and determine targets, both in the immediate battle space and well beyond a pilot's visual range. IFF systems include:
- Long-range airborne IFF systems for the E-2C Hawkeye, the long-range airborne surveillance Mark XII IFF, and electronic countermeasures processing.
- Combined interrogator and transponders for the F/A-18 and F-16 fighters, complete Mark XII identification systems.
- Common transponders, in production for the U.S. Navy and Army that incorporate features required in today's global military and civil traffic air control environments.
- Digital interrogators for airborne surveillance, naval and land-based air defense, and air traffic control applications.
- Short-range portable interrogators, including man-portable and ground-to-air units that are compatible with all short-range air defense systems.
- Data acquisition systems for air defense, weapon systems, air traffic control, and range instrumentation. BAE Systems also provides complete national IFF upgrades, including requirements surveys, equipment, installation, test, training, and full logistics support.
