The multifunctional information distribution system (MIDS) was originally an effort to produce a smaller, lighter Link 16 terminal that would be used by multinational forces. Five nations (U.S., France, Germany, Italy and Spain) participated in the effort, led by BAE Systems in the U.S.

This multi-year effort culminated in the low volume terminal, and later, the fighter data link terminal, both of which are interoperable with all other Link 16 terminals (including JTIDS).

MIDS, like all Link 16 terminals, is a proven method of information exchange. Data from an AWACS or Joint STARS can be instantly shared with other aircraft, as well as with friendly forces, enabling personnel to see battle information taking place well beyond their own sensors.

MIDS terminals have been proven in the battlespace, saving countless lives during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

MIDS terminals are produced by Data Link Solutions, a joint venture of BAE Systems and Rockwell Collins.
