The Barrow Shipyard secured the order for two large fleet oilers for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in March 1997.
The Wave Class oilers have a speed of 18 knots and a range of 8000 nautical miles at 15 knots and meet the latest Lloyds Regulations and Marine Safety Agency Standards, including a double hull to protect against pollution. Each ship carries an organic Merlin HM MK1 or equivalent helicopter. The Auxiliary Oiler is designed for the Replenishement at Sea (RAS) transfer of liquid stores to Royal Navy Ships.
