Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary)

Surface Fleet Solutions built and delivered two of two Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) vessels, RFA Mounts Bay and RFA Cardigan Bay, for the UK government. In addition, we are completing the fourth of class ship, Lyme Bay, and are providing warranty for the entire class of four ships (RFA Largs Bay, having been delivered by Swan Hunter).

These highly capable 16,000 tonne vessels provide logistical support to the Royal Navy’s amphibious assault ships and are operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.


The LSD(A) is designed to move troops with their ammunition, vehicles and stores to wherever they are required around the world and deliver them as a fighting force directly into battle by landing craft, mexeflote powered raft and helicopter. This capability could just as easily be used in humanitarian relief as in war fighting.
