BAE SYSTEMS DONATES HUMVEE FOR NEW VETERANS MEMORIAL PLAZA

07 Nov 2009 | Ref. 232/2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio - For most, encounters with Humvees have been limited to seeing them in TV news stories focusing on U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Starting Wednesday folks in the Cincinnati Tri-State Area will be able to get an up close and personal look at a Humvee that’s taken up permanent residence at Batavia Township’s new Veterans Memorial Plaza in Batavia, Ohio.

“For more than two decades, the Humvee has been a versatile work horse, safely transporting America’s servicemen and women—our Veterans—through many a military conflict,” said Rex Parsons, Batavia Township Administrator.  Calling the Humvee a symbol of freedom and a fitting centerpiece for the Memorial Plaza, Parsons also singled out BAE Systems’ Security & Survivability business for its contribution. “Fortunately for us, and our Veterans, their employees saw more than an old, dilapidated humvee, resting discarded and forgotten on a scrap heap, they saw the possibilities. They rolled up their sleeves, got busy, and spent hundreds of hours painstakingly refurbishing and restoring the vehicle to its current luster and condition.”

Over the years, BAE Systems’ Security & Survivability business has armored more than 20, 000 humvees at its Cincinnati area production facilities.

“We can think of no better home for this Humvee than Batavia Township’s new Veterans Memorial Plaza where it will be a constant reminder of the courage and sacrifice made by the men and women of our nation’s military services,” said Tony Russell, President BAE Systems’ Security & Survivability business.

During the Veterans Day dedication ceremony, Clermont County and Batavia Township officials will formally recognize BAE Systems’ Security & Survivability business for its dual commitment to America’s troops and to communities in the Greater Cincinnati Area where the company’s employees live and work.

U.S. Representative Jean Schmidt (OH 2nd District) is also expected to be on hand for the
ceremony.

The dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 11 at the Batavia Township Veterans Memorial Plaza (1535 Clough Pike) and will be immediately followed by a reception.
