Frimley, United Kingdom – BAE Systems’ expert testimony played a key role in the recent decision to grant planning permission for E.ON’s Tween Bridge wind farm near Doncaster, UK.
The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform granted consent to the wind farm on 28 February 2008 subject to the implementation of mitigation measures outlined in BAE Systems’ evidence to the public enquiry. BAE Systems was appointed by the wind farm developer, E.ON and over a two year period the two companies have worked together to address the aviation concerns of the regional airport. The wind farm will require the regulatory approval of the Civil Aviation Authority before it can commence operation.
BAE Systems works with all stakeholders to understand the complex aviation issues associated with wind farm developments, and the technological options available to mitigate these issues. Addressing these issues early in the planning cycle can reduce the risk, time and cost spent in reaching planning consent.
Interference to radar from wind farms can arise from clutter (signal returns from the turbine blades), overhead obscuration (loss of radar information displayed to the operator) and false radar tracks.

The 22 turbine Tween Bridge wind farm, at Thorne, South Yorkshire, will generate 66 megawatts – enough to power up to 26,500 homes.
A second nearby wind farm at Keadby has also been given planning approval subject to similar conditions.
