BAE Systems transforms local school playground

05 Aug 2006 | Ref. 00056

It’s been fun and games at Cambridge Primary School this week for BAE Systems painters who have been transforming the playground with fun activities, in preparation for the return of the pupils this September.

In 2006 BAE Systems instigated the BAE Systems Governors Forum.  The aim of this forum was to bring local school governors together, for them to advise BAE Systems on any assistance they require for their school.

Lorraine O’Flynn, Governor of Cambridge Primary School and also Secretarial Administrator for the Finance Department at BAE Systems, at the forum advised that the pupils at her school were desperate for games to play in the playground.  BAE Systems visited the school and agreed to put up football posts, paint a treasure island and activity line on the playground.

Lorraine O’Flynn said, “The children had the opportunity to prioritise what they would like to see in the school playground.  BAE Systems has agreed to do what they can from our wish list.  It will be great to see the children’s faces when they return from the summer break and see their playground transformed”.

Other project’s which came from the forum, Russ Watson, Governor of Low Furness School requested assistance to purchase new science books for his school; these were presented at the annual prize giving ceremony by Keith Minnican, Head of Platform Design in July this year.

Nine local schools advised that they were short of community governors, which is a governor whose child does not necessarily attend the school.  Nine BAE Systems graduates have volunteered to fill these positions.  They will now attend governors meetings and assist with items such as the preparation of budgets for the school.

BAE Systems has also agreed to sponsor a Maths or Design & Technology prize for every school prize giving and to ensure that all schools are aware of the work experience opportunities within the shipyard.

In total 33 local schools are now represented at this forum which takes place on a bi-annual basis.  Letters have been sent to those not represented informing them that the next forum takes place in September this year.
