MINNEAPOLIS – BAE Systems received its third contract from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems to build a 57mm Mk 110 Mod 0 Naval Gun system to go aboard the U.S. Coast Guard's National Security Cutter. The third gun is scheduled for delivery in July 2007. BAE Systems delivered its first Mk 110 for the Coast Guard program in January 2006, and will deliver the second gun in December 2006
The 57mm Mk 110 accurately fires automatic salvos of the highly lethal 57mm 3P ammunition at a firing rate of 220 rounds per minute and a range of up to nine miles. The naval gun is lightweight and compact, with minimal deck penetration for easy install, and operates in remote or local control.
“The 57mm Mk 110 and its programmable ammunition will allow our sailors to counter surface, airborne and shore-based targets,” said Scott Thompson, director of the Mk 110 program for BAE Systems.
“Our gun system meets the requirements set by the U.S. Coast Guard and will combat today’s emerging maritime threats.”
BAE Systems has also received contracts to deliver three Mk 110 gun systems to support the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship program, and expects a fourth contract later this year. Additionally, the gun has been selected to go aboard the U.S. Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter and as the close-in gun system aboard the U.S. Navy’s DDG 1000.
“The Mk 110 gun has the versatility needed to be an effective weapon system for both the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard. This gun will support future U.S. fleets, while helping to advance interoperability between the services,” said Thompson.
