BAE SYSTEMS AT FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL 2002 - Pavilion OS15

19 Jul 2002

The BAE Systems Pavilion (OS15) at FI2002 is a clearly marked building, located on the former Radar Terrace, showing on two floors, some of the world's most advanced aircraft, aerospace and defence systems. The BAE Systems Pavilion will also house AMS and Astrium, while Eurofighter and MBDA have co-located pavilions.

NEW - STYLE EUROFIGHTER

At Farnborough 2002, Eurofighter Typhoon will take part in the flying display as will the Company's Hawk Lead-in Fighter demonstrator aircraft. The Eurofighter full-scale replica will be shown for the first time with conformal tanks, and it, Hawk and the Gripen replicas will also be shown with cockpit demonstrators. Nimrod MRA4 and JSF will be central to the Air Systems presentation in the main stand area. Air Systems employs 10,000 people on four key military aircraft businesses - Eurofighter, Nimrod, Hawk and JSF - with a new Business unit focussing on future concepts and systems.

DEADLY HELICOPTER UPGRADE

Avionics will be demonstrating the breadth of its capability with the upgraded Mi-24 Hind cockpit on display for the first time at Farnborough. The upgrade features a multi-sensor turret, digital mission displays and map, electronic warfare systems and a FLIR. The Striker helmet and Eurofighter pilots' helmet, recently awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise, will also be on display on the Eurofighter stand. The Eurofighter defensive aids suite, EuroDASS, will be on show next to the static Eurofighter. A range of active pilot inceptors will also be displayed - Avionics will supply the stick and throttle for the Lockheed Martin F-35. BAE Systems will also launch at Farnborough its first e-scan radar, the maritime surveillance Seaspray 7000E. Avionics will additionally be displaying the SEGWAY human transporter, recently introduced in New York City, that at its core contains technology provided by our silicon gyro.

FORCE PROJECTION FOR A SAFER WORLD

Future Carrier is the project to design and build two aircraft carriers that will form the heart of the UK's future Force Projection capability, to enter service in 2012 and 2015. The BAE Systems Future Carrier Team's Farnborough display emphasises the importance of systems integration within the Future Carrier platform and of inter-linking to the Force Projection System of Systems. Future Carrier will emphasise BAE Systems knowledge, skills and experience in UK defence Prime Contracting and the qualities of the international team assembled. The display includes an audiovisual presentation which will feature new animations and imagery of the BAE Systems Future Carrier and its innovative features.

BAE SYSTEMS DEVELOPS NEW GRASS

Customer Solutions & Support, BAE Systems 2.5 bn support, services and solutions business, operates at every level of the support spectrum. It manages major international prime contracts such as the Al Yamamah programme. At the opposite end of the spectrum it provides flexible support and service packages, including a wide range of flying and technician training, aircraft and ship support, manpower and consultancy services and facilities management.

A 'grass roots' example of the flexible solutions CS&S provides is its eco-friendly Fibreturf runway and apron airfield surfacing material, recently installed at the School of Army Aviation's Middle Wallop airfield (see separate media release). A demonstration installation is part of the static aircraft display, just north of Hall 1 and examples of the work of CSS at the 'Total Solutions' display in the BAE Systems pavilion.

WHAT'S COOKING IN THE CAPABILITY KITCHEN

C4ISR will be featuring a 'Capability Kitchen' reflecting how the company and its partners focus the spirit of innovation in the field of defence electronics to provide network-centric capabilities to international customers. The Kitchen will comprise presentations on all levels of the technology chain, from systems solutions in the digitized battlespace to the application of cutting-edge techniques to enhance the performance of civil technologies applied in the military domain. Typical offerings include applying the principles of quantum cryptography, the use of chaos theory in communications, computer-based collaboration between unmanned aerial vehicles in mission planning and BAE Systems' involvement in emerging theatre-wide C4ISR solutions.

THE DOORS

Making its international debut is the large cargo door ATP Freighter (ATPF) that has been developed under a joint programme between BAE Systems Regional Aircraft and West Air Sweden. BAE Systems at Prestwick has designed the door and created a Service Bulletin, while West Air Sweden has manufactured and installed the door. The aircraft made a successful first flight on July 10. The ATPF brings second generation turboprop economics, outstanding environmental credentials and 8 tonne cargo capacity to the regional cargo market and will be an excellent replacement for some of the 250 older and less efficient 5-6 tonne turboprop freighters that are now facing more stringent noise and emissions standards.

THE AMERICANS ARE COMING

BAE Systems North America will feature innovative solutions - technologies and capabilities that meet our customers' needs for land, sea, air, space and C4ISR applications. These include unattended ground sensors, defensive aids suites, common data links, and tactical networking solutions for land forces. Air capabilities encompass situational awareness, threat detection and identification, interactive avionics, airborne reconnaissance, and infrared countermeasures systems. Solutions for sea applications include advance sonobuoy communications links for surveillance and anti-submarine warfare, networked communications for surface ships and amphibious operations. Emerging technologies in the growing C4ISR market consist of hyper spectral sensors and imaging, warfighter information networks, precision targeting and mission management. Additionally, BAE Systems North America will feature the Joint Chemical Agent Detector/Chem Scout --the next generation point chemical detector for the U.S. military.

SHIPS AT AN AIRSHOW?!

Sea Systems Group will display a variety of products that have stimulated interest in the export market. Firstly, large air-capable amphibious and auxiliary ships - Landing Platform Dock and Auxiliary Oiler, showing naval design features which have provoked significant attention world wide. The successful Type 23 Frigate demonstrates a capability already enjoyed by the Royal Navy and required by many others. The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) offers a successful high capability/low cost solution for the export customer. In addition to the specific displays there is an interactive multi-media system which can provide full details of all the products, services, facilities and capabilities of the Sea Systems Group.

MEDIA CENTRE

A fully equipped, working media centre is part of the BAE Systems pavilion, with 14 workstations equipped with analogue lines.
