BAE Systems Precision Aerostructures, a subsidiary of BAE Systems plc, United Kingdom, announced today an employee layoff of approximately 30 employees. All were employed at BAE Systems Wellington, Kansas facilities. This action is a result of the lower demand for the company's products due to the overall weakening of the aerospace market following the events of September 11, 2001.
The job cuts affected both the machining trades and various support positions, including technical and office workers. The total workforce at Precision Aerostructures will stand at 340 following this reduction.
The company has thoroughly analyzed all of its current employment programs in the Wellington plant and has aggressively surveyed the marketplace in an effort to find additional work. Unfortunately, the company has met with only moderate success and the layoff became necessary.
Affected employees were notified both in writing and in person.
BAE Systems Precision Aerostructures President Mike Strader commented on the future by stating, "The needs of our customers and employees remain paramount, and based on our existing business outlook and the anticipated gradual rebounding of the aerospace market we expect no further reductions in staff. Our promised delivery schedules to customers will not be affected by this decision.""
