Perhaps our commitment to doing good, and our determination to measure our effectiveness in doing so, is best shown by the fact that we’ve created a Corporate Responsibility Committee which reports directly to the Board.
This committee’s business is to assist the Board in overseeing all strategy and policies on social, environmental and ethical issues. Right now, we’re busy developing a Corporate Responsibility (CR) agenda, which – to begin with – will inform our strategy over the next five years.
It’s good to know it’s that high a priority – but perhaps what people actually experience in the community might mean more. Like 350 employees (known as ambassadors) visiting schools to help with engineering projects and to give careers advice. Like the sponsorships and donations we fund and provide all over the world. Even, for example, the Community Liaison initiative that our Submarines Solutions Business Group recently launched for the young people of Barrow, where we conducted a survey to find out all about local priorities. Not to mention giving young students the chance to build everything from a ferris wheel and a ping-pong ball gun to a rollercoaster.
We’ll be acting on the results as well.
It’s just another example of us trying to put our ideals into living and useful practice.
