Medium-weight Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV)
FRES (Future Rapid Effect System) is the UK MoD programme to deliver and manage through life a fleet of medium-weight armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) for the British Army.
It is the largest ever UK land programme with an acquisition value of about £16bn, and a potential through-life cost of £50 billion. The MoD is targeting an initial operating capability in 2012.
The FRES fleet will include many vehicle types, split into four groups (plus a recently-announced 'Basic Capability Utility'). The first vehicles to be delivered will be the Utility group, followed by Recce, Medium Armour and Manoeuvre Support.
This microsite is about BAE Systems Land Systems' aspiration to be the vehicle integrator, initially for the Utility group.
