Manufacturing

The Newcastle fighting vehicle manufacturing plant was purpose-built for the manufacture of the Challenger 2 main battle tank in the 1990s.

TERRIER

TERRIER

Early production work is being carried out at Newcastle.

Currently it is carrying out low-volume production of vehicles such as the Titan bridge-layer and Trojan minefield breacher, integration of the Panther Scout vehicle and early work on Terrier, the advanced drive-by-wire engineer vehicle.

BAE Systems is investing £20m in Newcastle to transform it, by 2012, from a low-volume manufacturing plant to a state-of-the-art facility for higher-throughput FRES final assembly, integration and test.

We are also bringing in key lean manufacturing skills from our US business.
