Achieving a leadership level of safety performance
We firmly believe that ensuring the safety of our employees and those who work on our sites is a pre-condition of our operations. We recognise the risks associated both with manufacturing and daily office work, and seek to ensure that these risks are managed and mitigated as far as is reasonably possible.
Many of our employees are involved in manufacturing, often using heavy equipment and sometimes handling explosive or nuclear materials.
In addition, a number of BAE Systems employees are based at customer sites providing maintenance and support services. These include military bases in combat zones, such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
Our goal is to achieve a leadership level of safety performance, compared with the best performing companies worldwide. This requires a significant reduction in workplace accidents and injuries. Our target, based on the performance of leading companies, is to be below 2,000 days lost to work-related injuries per 100,000 employees.
Environment
We recognise that our day-to-day operations, our products and their use and disposal have the potential to damage the environment. To keep our impact to a minimum, we must manage our resources efficiently and minimise waste.
We also need to consider the lifecycle of our products including how they are maintained and disposed of. Reducing the environmental impacts of our operations helps us to cut costs, improve efficiency and comply with the growing volume of environmental regulation. Concerns around climate change and rising energy costs mean that our environmental performance is of growing interest to all of our stakeholders.
